Amazon.com Inc’s Twitch has been the undisputed king of video game livestreaming for almost a decade, but other platforms have attempted to dethrone it – Meta Platforms Inc’s Facebook Gaming, TikTok Live, Microsoft Corp’s now defunct Mixer and YouTube Gaming, which has offered lucrative deals to lure top personalities away from witch.
Twitch has remained consistent, with 2.6 million viewers watching 92,200 livestreams – one of which was Adin Ross until recently.

At 22, Ross is renowned for his NBA 2K and Grand Theft Auto V streams, but recently decided to switch platforms. Kick Streaming, which aligns more closely with Ross’ edgy persona, launched late last year and has been successfully courting Twitch streamers fed up with its restrictive policies.
“Twitch is making some unwise decisions,” Ross declared in a recent interview with journalist Jake Lucky. He pointed to their controversial revenue split and push for streamers to play more ads as examples of such miscalculation. “Now is the perfect time for Kick to step in and provide some competition,” Ross concluded.

Kick advertises a 95-5 revenue split compared to Twitch’s default 50-50 split. Although Ross claims he received an enormous sum for his Kick contract, money wasn’t his only motive.
He wants the freedom to say whatever the hell he wants on the platform he created – from livestreaming the Super Bowl to scrolling through Pornhub and even inviting a Nazi on for discussion about their views. Conversely, Twitch has more stringent moderation policies that enforce their community guidelines against hate speech, harassment sexual content and copyright infringement.
Additionally, Ross was no longer permitted to livestream himself gambling with cryptocurrency — an activity Twitch had outlawed as of 2022.
Twitch permanently banned Ross’ account earlier this week. In a message sent to Bloomberg, Twitch noted its policies against “unmoderated Hateful Conduct in chat,” such as racist and anti-semitic messages.
A representative for Kick stated the site is continuously striving to enhance its moderation processes and policies. They added that Kick abides by Digital Millennium Copyright Act requests and does not tolerate hate speech.
Kick’s ownership structure remains unclear. The platform is being heavily promoted by Tyler Niknam, better known by his Twitch stream handle Trainwreck.
Eddie Craven and Bijan Tehrani, co-owners of crypto gambling site Stake.com, have reportedly invested in Kick for an undisclosed sum. Currently, Kick boasts 30,000 viewers watching streamers play casino games across various platforms–including on Stake.

Many in the world advocate for less regulation on social media sites than what exists now. Examples include former President Donald Trump’s Truth Social or Gab, a “free speech social network”.
But even Elon Musk, who bought Twitter last year with an eye towards less regulation, acknowledged that turning the site with its 450 million users into “a free-for-all hellscape where anything can be said without consequences” would not work.
Kick isn’t likely to seriously challenge Twitch’s viewership anytime soon; only 793 people are watching League of Legends streamers on the platform compared to 189,000 on Twitch.
Kick is grappling with the reality that its laissez-faire approach could limit growth. Niknam said he wanted to “create a platform with more freedom,” but gets frustrated when people “cross lines and do things for clout or high viewership.”
What most social media platforms and even games have realized is that in order to attract the largest number of users, they must make their site welcoming for everyone.
